effect of tramadol at different doses on orthodontic tooth movement and bone resorption in rats

چکیده
background: tramadol is an opioid agonist that has the potential of being abused. the aim of this study was to compare the effect of different doses of tramadol on orthodontic tooth movement (otm) and bone resorption in rats. materials and methods: forty‑two male rats were assigned randomly to two experimental groups and one control group. nickel–titanium coil springs were used to exert orthodontic force. the rats in the control group and experimental group‑1, respectively, received a daily injection of 0.1 ml of normal saline and 10 mg/kg of tramadol for 14 days. the rats in experimental group‑2 received 10 mg/kg of the same drug on days 1-4, 20 mg/kg on days 5-8, 40 mg/kg on days 9-12 and 60 mg/kg on days 13 and 14. otm was measured on days 4, 8, 12, and 14. at the end of the experimental period, the rats were sacrificed. histological analysis was also performed to evaluate the number of osteoclasts, osteoblasts, and howship’s lacunae. results: statistical analysis with analysis of variance tests showed that the rats in experimental group‑2 had significantly decreased otm compared with the other two groups ( p < 0.05), whereas otm for the rats in experimental group‑1 was comparable to that in the control group ( p > 0.05). the histological evaluations did not show any significant difference among the groups ( p > 0.05). conclusion: the effect of tramadol hydrochloride on otm depends on the dosage used. high doses of the drug reduce the extent of otm significantly. key words: orthodontic tooth movement, rat, tramadol

Effect of Ovariectomy on Orthodontic Tooth Movement in Rats
Background and Aim: Estrogen affects the metabolism in females. This study aimed to assess the effect of absence of estrogen on orthodontic tooth movement in rats. Materials and Methods: In this animal study, 55 rats were randomly divided into four groups. Group 1 (n=10) had intact ovaries. In group 2 (n=15), ovaries were intact but the rats were subjected to stress due to tooth preparation. I...
متن کاملThe effect of caffeine on orthodontic tooth movement in rats
Objective(s): to determine the effect of different doses of caffeine on orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) in rats. Materials and Methods: Forty male 250-300 g Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into four groups of ten animals each and received 0 (control), 1 g/l, 2 g/l and 3 g/l caffeine in tap water for 3 days. Orthodontic appliances were ligated between the maxillary first molars and in...
متن کاملThe Effect of Ovariectomy and Orchiectomy on Orthodontic Tooth Movement and Root Resorption in Wistar Rats.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Root resorption (RR) after orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) is known as a multifactorial complication of orthodontic treatments. Hormonal deficiencies and their effect on bone turnover are reported to have influences on the rate of tooth movement and root resorption. PURPOSE This study was designed to evaluate the effect of female and male steroid sex hormones on toot...
متن کاملTooth movement and root resorption; the effect of ovariectomy on orthodontic force application in rats.
OBJECTIVE To quantify the amount of tooth movement and orthodontically induced root resorption (OIRR) in ovariectomized rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS Five 10-week-old female Wistar rats undergoing ovariectomy (OVX) were investigated as the experimental group, and the other five without ovariectomy served as the control group. Four weeks after ovariectomy, 25-g nickel-titanium closed-coil spring...
متن کاملEffect of odanacatib on root resorption and alveolar bone metabolism during orthodontic tooth movement.
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of local administration of odanacatib (ODN) on orthodontic root resorption and the status of alveolar bone metabolism in rat molars. All specimens were scanned using microcomputed tomography and then the raw images were reconstructed. The total volume of the root resorption craters of the 60 g-NS (normal saline) group was higher than in the 60...
متن کاملEffect of Long-Term Captopril Administration on Bone Density and Orthodontic Tooth Movement
Background and Aim: Captopril is an oral angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) inhibitor extensively used in the treatment of hypertension and heart failure. ACE has been suggested to function in bone cells and might therefore impact orthodontic tooth movement (OTM). Considering the controversy surrounding the effects of ACE and its inhibitors on osseous tissues, we aimed to evaluate the effect o...
